Dux hot water repairs and replacement
Has your Dux tank stopped heating, started leaking or begun making odd noises? We're a local team based in Matraville, and we repair, service and replace Dux hot water systems in homes across the southern Eastern Suburbs. We find the cause, walk you through what can be done and agree a fixed price with you before starting.
Typical Dux hot water issues
Storage tank lukewarm or cold
On electric Dux tanks the usual suspects are the element and thermostat. On gas models, check the pilot. Either way, the tank itself may still have plenty of life left.
Heat pump struggling in winter
Heat pumps work harder when the air is cold. If yours is slow to recover or relying heavily on its backup element, there may be an airflow, fan or refrigeration fault worth checking.
Relief valve or drain line leaking
Water running from the drain pipe beside the tank most of the time can mean a tired relief valve or high incoming pressure. Both are fixable.
Rumbling or popping sounds
Sediment settling at the bottom of a storage tank can cause rumbling as it heats. In a heat pump, unusual noise may come from the fan or compressor. We'll work out which.
Repairing Dux storage tanks and heat pumps
Dux makes electric and gas storage tanks as well as heat pumps for homes. The parts that wear out vary by type, so we diagnose first and quote once we know what's needed.
- Electric storage: elements, thermostats, relief valves and anodes
- Gas storage: thermocouples, pilot assemblies, gas controls and burners
- Heat pumps: fans, sensors, controls, backup elements and valves
Heat pumps contain a refrigeration circuit, a bit like an air conditioner. If the fault sits within that sealed system, we'll explain what's involved and whether repair or replacement is the better value for an older unit. We repair, service and replace Dux systems, and we handle most other brands as well.
Repair, or time for a new system?
A sound tank with a failed part is usually worth fixing. A tank leaking from its cylinder, or a unit that's had several breakdowns in a short time, is usually not. We'll be upfront with you about which camp your system falls into.
If you're replacing, we'll go over the options: another Dux of a similar type, a different brand, a heat pump in place of an electric tank, or gas continuous flow if you have a suitable supply. Our fixed price covers removal of the old unit, installation, any tempering valve required and the compliance paperwork.
Dux systems in southern Eastern Suburbs homes
Many single-storey brick and fibro homes in Matraville, Botany and Chifley have an electric Dux tank in the laundry or at the back of the house, often connected to old copper or galvanised pipes. When we're working on these, we also check the valves and nearby connections for corrosion so a repair isn't undone by a weak joint next door.
Heat pumps have become a popular upgrade for owners with a bit of yard or a side path, from Maroubra to Kingsford. They do need room for air to move and a spot where the fan noise won't bother anyone. Close to the coast at Malabar and Little Bay, salt-laden air is harder on outdoor equipment, so we think carefully about where a new unit goes.
Easy checks before you call
- For electric models, see if the hot water circuit has tripped at the switchboard.
- For gas models, make sure the gas supply is on and check whether the pilot is lit.
- For heat pumps, make sure nothing is blocking the air intake or outlet.
- Look for water on the floor or a constantly running drain line.
- If there's any whiff of gas around a gas Dux, turn the meter off, air the house out, take everyone outside, keep away from flames and switches, then phone a licensed gasfitter such as our team.

Common questions
Do you repair Dux heat pumps?
Yes. We diagnose and repair Dux heat pumps, including fans, sensors, controls and backup elements. If the sealed refrigeration system has failed on an older unit, we'll talk through whether replacement is better value.
Why is my Dux heat pump slower in winter?
Heat pumps draw warmth from the air, so they take longer when it's cold outside. If it's much slower than usual or always running on its booster, it's worth getting checked.
My Dux electric tank has no hot water. What should I check?
Look at the switchboard to see if the hot water circuit has tripped. If it hasn't, or it trips again after a reset, call us to test the element and thermostat.
Can a leaking Dux tank be repaired?
A leak from a valve or fitting can usually be fixed. If water is coming from the cylinder itself, the tank will need replacing. We'll find the source first.
Are you a Dux warranty agent?
No. We're an independent plumbing business that repairs, services and replaces Dux systems. If your unit is still covered by the manufacturer's warranty, speak to Dux about a claim before booking a repair.
Should I swap my old Dux electric tank for a heat pump?
It's worth considering if you have a suitable outdoor spot. A heat pump uses much less electricity than a standard electric tank. We'll check the space, airflow and noise before recommending it.
Do you install other brands besides Dux?
Yes. We install and repair a range of hot water brands, so we can recommend the system that best suits your home rather than one particular label.
