Rinnai hot water repairs, servicing and replacement

Rinnai continuous flow units are mounted on outside walls all over Sydney, and when one stops heating, you notice straight away. Working out of Matraville, we repair, service and replace Rinnai hot water systems for homes throughout the southern Eastern Suburbs. Expect a clear explanation, a choice of options and a fixed price agreed before we begin.

When your Rinnai needs a look

Error code on the controller

Rinnai units display a code on the kitchen or bathroom controller when something isn't right. Write it down and tell us when you call. It helps us narrow down the fault and bring the right parts.

Hot, then cold, then hot again

Temperature swings mid-shower can come from low water flow, a partly blocked inlet filter, a gas supply issue or a component wearing out inside the unit.

Unit won't ignite at all

If you turn on a tap and the unit stays silent, the cause may be power to the unit, the gas supply, the ignition system or a fault the controller has locked out.

Noises or a gas smell

Banging, roaring or a smell of gas near the unit needs attention. If you smell gas, turn it off at the meter, open up the house, get everyone out and call a licensed gasfitter.

How we repair a Rinnai continuous flow unit

Continuous flow systems are clever but fussy. They need the right water flow, the right gas pressure and clean sensors to fire properly. When we arrive, we read the controller and any stored fault, check the gas supply and water flow, clean the inlet filter and test the ignition and flame sensing.

Many faults come down to a part that can be replaced, such as an igniter, sensor, fan or valve. Some are caused by things outside the unit, like an undersized gas line or a shut-off valve that's been knocked half closed. We'll explain what we've found in plain terms and give you a fixed price before carrying out any repair.

As licensed gasfitters, we can safely open, test and recommission gas units. Please don't remove the cover yourself.

Servicing keeps continuous flow units reliable

A Rinnai that's never been serviced can carry on for years, but scale, dust and insects can build up inside, especially on an exposed wall. A service generally covers:

  • Cleaning the water inlet filter
  • Checking gas pressure and combustion
  • Inspecting the burner, fan and flue outlet
  • Testing the controllers and safety functions
  • Looking over valves and pipe connections for leaks

If you own storage or heat pump models from Rinnai, we look after those too, along with most other brands.

Replacing a Rinnai unit

When a unit is old, has repeat faults or needs a costly internal part, replacement can be the better use of your money. You can stay with continuous flow, which usually means a straightforward swap on the same wall, or consider a gas storage tank or heat pump. We check gas and water connections, the flue clearances and the controllers so the new system works properly from day one. Your quote includes taking away the old unit and the compliance certificate.

Rinnai systems in southern Eastern Suburbs homes

Continuous flow heaters are very common on the townhouses and newer duplexes around Pagewood, Eastgardens and Kensington, often fitted high on a side wall next to the neighbour's fence. Access can be tight, so we come equipped for working in narrow passages.

In older houses in Maroubra and Matraville, Rinnai units have often replaced an earlier gas tank. Sometimes the original gas pipe wasn't upsized at the time, which can lead to the unit struggling when several taps run at once. Homes near the sea at Malabar and La Perouse can also see faster corrosion on the casing and fittings, so occasional servicing pays off.

Common questions

My Rinnai is showing an error code. What does it mean?

Codes point to different faults, and the meaning can vary between models. Rather than guess, note the code on the controller and tell us when you call. We'll use it to work out the likely cause and bring suitable parts.

Can I reset my Rinnai myself?

Turning the unit off at the controller and back on is fine to try once. If the code comes back or the unit still won't heat, leave it and call us so we can check it properly.

Why does my Rinnai go cold when someone else turns on a tap?

It can be low water flow, a partly blocked filter, or not enough gas reaching the unit when demand is high. We test flow and gas pressure to find out which.

How often should a Rinnai continuous flow be serviced?

Every couple of years is a reasonable guide, or sooner if it's in an exposed spot or you've noticed changes in performance. Your owner's manual may also give a recommendation.

Is Rinnai repair work covered by the manufacturer?

We're an independent business that repairs, services and replaces Rinnai systems. If your unit is still within its manufacturer's warranty period, contact Rinnai about a claim first.

Can you replace my Rinnai with a different brand?

Yes. We install a range of brands and types, and we'll recommend whatever suits your gas supply, space and household.

Do you work on Rinnai gas storage and heat pumps too?

We do. Continuous flow is what we see most often, but we also repair and replace Rinnai storage and heat pump systems.
