Fridge water filters and dispensers
A fridge with a cold water dispenser and ice maker is great, until you realise it needs a water connection behind it. Plumbed-in fridges need a water line, an isolation valve and the right fittings, and the filter inside needs changing regularly to keep the water tasting good. Here's what's involved in connecting one, and how to look after it.
Connecting a fridge to the water supply
- A water line is run from the nearest cold water pipe, often under the kitchen sink, to behind the fridge.
- An isolation valve is fitted so the fridge can be turned off without turning off the house.
- The connection uses the right fittings for the fridge, with backflow protection where needed.
- We check for leaks with the fridge pushed back into place, and make sure the line isn't kinked.

Fridge filters
Internal filter
Most fridges have a filter cartridge inside or under the fridge. Most makers suggest changing it about every six months.
External inline filter
A filter on the line behind the fridge or under the sink. Useful for fridges without their own filter, or for extra filtering.
Signs it's due
Slower water flow, a change in taste, smaller ice, or the fridge's filter light coming on.

Common problems
- Leaks behind the fridge: often a loose push-fit connection or a kinked line. Water can damage floors unseen.
- Slow dispenser: an overdue filter, or a partly closed valve.
- Bad taste: a filter past its life, or a new line that needs flushing.
In southern Eastern Suburbs homes
We connect plumbed-in fridges in kitchens across Matraville, Maroubra and Eastgardens. In older homes with grit from galvanised pipes, an extra inline filter protects the fridge's valves.
