Pipe freezing: working on a live pipe without turning off the water

Sometimes the water can't be turned off. The main valve is seized, there's no isolation valve where it's needed, or turning off the water would cut supply to other people in the building. Pipe freezing solves that. We freeze a short section of the pipe to form a solid ice plug that holds back the water, do the repair or fit a new valve, then let it thaw. The rest of the water supply stays on the whole time.

When pipe freezing is used

Seized main valve

The valve at the water meter won't turn or won't shut off fully. We freeze the pipe, replace the valve, and you have a working shut-off again.

No isolation valve

Older homes often have no valve on the pipe we need to work on. Freezing lets us fit one without shutting off the house.

Apartments and shared supplies

Where a pipe is shared with other units, freezing avoids shutting off water to everyone while we work on yours.

Valve and tap replacements

Replacing a leaking valve, cock or fitting on a live line, quickly and with no flooding.

How it works

  • We clamp a freezing head around the pipe on the supply side of the work.
  • It chills the pipe until the water inside freezes into a solid plug, usually within minutes for household pipe sizes.
  • With the plug holding the pressure, we cut in and do the repair or fit the new valve.
  • Once the work is done, the freezing head comes off and the ice thaws, restoring flow.

It works on the copper and many of the other pipes found in homes, within the sizes our equipment handles. We check the pipe first to make sure freezing is suitable and safe for that section.

Why it's worth it

Without freezing, a seized main valve might mean waiting for Sydney Water to shut off the street, or a much bigger job. Pipe freezing usually means a short, tidy repair on the day, and a new quarter-turn valve you can actually use next time. You get a fixed price before any work starts.

In southern Eastern Suburbs homes

Many older homes in Matraville, Botany and Maroubra still have their original main valve, and plenty of them have seized solid. Older walk-up units in Kensington and Kingsford often share a supply between neighbours. Pipe freezing is the cleanest way to sort out both.
