Do pull-out mixers affect the water pressure?

Pull-out and pull-down kitchen mixers are handy, but a common complaint is that they flow slower than the old tap. Sometimes that's just the design, and sometimes something's blocked or the wrong mixer has been chosen for your water supply. Here's why pull-out mixers can feel weaker, and what can be done about it.

Why pull-out mixers can flow less

Narrow hose

The flexible hose that pulls out with the spray head is narrower than a fixed spout, which limits flow.

Water-saving rating

Most new mixers are made to use less water per minute. That's good for bills, but the flow feels softer than an old tap.

Blocked aerator or spray head

The fine screens in the spray head catch grit and scale, especially after plumbing work or with older pipes.

Blocked inlet filters

Many mixers have small filters where the hoses connect, or check valves in the pull-out hose. These clog over time.

Low-pressure supply

Some mixers need a minimum pressure to work well. Homes on lower pressure, or tank water, notice it more.

What helps

  • Unscrew and clean the spray head or aerator. Soaking it in vinegar removes scale.
  • Check the hose isn't kinked under the sink and the counterweight lets it move freely.
  • Have the inlet filters and check valves cleaned.
  • Check the isolation valves under the sink are fully open.
  • If the mixer itself is the limit, choose a model rated for higher flow or suited to your pressure when replacing it.

How we help

We test the flow and pressure at the sink, clean or replace the filters and parts that restrict it, and if the mixer is the problem, recommend one that suits your water supply. You get a fixed price before any work starts. If flow is weak at every tap, see our water pressure guide.

In southern Eastern Suburbs homes

In older homes in Matraville, Malabar and Botany, grit from galvanised pipes clogs the fine screens in pull-out mixers quickly. Where homes have a pressure limiting valve set low, a mixer that suits that pressure makes all the difference.

Common questions

Do pull-out kitchen mixers have lower pressure?

They often have lower flow because of the narrow hose and water-saving design, and clogged screens make it worse.

How do I improve the flow from my pull-out mixer?

Clean the spray head and aerator, check the hose isn't kinked, make sure the valves are fully open, and have the inlet filters cleaned.

Why did my mixer flow drop after plumbing work?

Grit dislodged during the work often lodges in the spray head or inlet filters. Cleaning them usually fixes it.

Can you recommend a mixer with better flow?

Yes. We'll check your pressure and suggest mixers that suit it.
