Why are my drains gurgling?
A gurgle from the sink as the water drains, a burp from the toilet when the shower runs, or a bubbling floor waste when the washing machine empties: drains that gurgle are trying to tell you something. Usually it means air is being pushed or pulled through the water in the trap because the pipe further down is partly blocked or isn't venting properly. Caught early, it's often a quick fix. Left alone, it can turn into a full blockage.
What the gurgle is telling you
Only the kitchen sink gurgles
The problem is usually in the kitchen line itself: fat, food scraps and soap building up in the pipe between the sink and where it joins the main drain. The rest of the house is fine because their water doesn't pass through that section.
Several fixtures gurgle
When the toilet gurgles as the shower drains, or the floor waste bubbles when the washing machine empties, the blockage is further down where those pipes join, often in the main sewer line.
Gurgling with smells
A sewer smell as well as gurgling suggests air is being sucked out of the traps, so the water seal that keeps sewer gas out is being lost.
Gurgling only in heavy rain
Points to stormwater getting into the sewer, or a blocked line that can't cope with the extra flow.
Common causes
- Partial blockage: fat, soap, hair, wipes or tree roots narrowing the pipe.
- Tree roots: roots in the sewer line slow the flow and catch everything else. See our tree roots guide.
- Venting problems: every drainage system needs air to flow freely. A blocked vent pipe or a failed air admittance valve under a sink makes drains gurgle.
- Sagging or broken pipe: a dip in an old pipe holds water and debris, slowing everything down.
What to do
Don't keep pouring chemical drain cleaners down. They rarely clear the real problem and can damage older pipes. Instead, note which fixtures gurgle and when. We clear the line with a high-pressure jetter, then put a camera down to see what caused it, so you get the right fix rather than a repeat visit. You get clear options and a fixed price before any work starts. See drain jetting and CCTV drain inspection.
In southern Eastern Suburbs homes
Older homes in Matraville, Maroubra, Botany and Kingsford often still have clay sewer pipes with joints that tree roots love, and kitchen lines that have collected decades of fat. Gurgling is often the first sign of the blockage we end up clearing a few weeks later, so it pays to act early.

Common questions
Why does my kitchen sink gurgle but the rest of the house is fine?
The blockage is usually in the kitchen line itself, from fat, food and soap build-up, before it joins the main drain.
Why do bubbles come up through the floor waste when the washing machine drains?
The water is pushing air back up because the pipe further down is partly blocked or not venting properly. It's often an early sign of a blockage.
Is a gurgling drain serious?
Not on its own, but it usually means a partial blockage or venting problem that will get worse. Fixing it early is easier and cheaper.
Why does my toilet gurgle when the shower drains?
The shower and toilet share a pipe further down. A partial blockage there pushes air back through the toilet's water seal.
