Do I really need my sewer inspection opening raised to ground level?
An inspection opening, or IO, is a capped access point on your sewer line, usually a round cap in the ground near the house or front boundary. It's how a plumber gets into the pipe to clear a blockage or run a camera. If yours is buried, covered by paving or sitting below the surface, you've probably been told it needs raising. Here's why that matters.
Why the inspection opening matters
Clearing blockages
Without an accessible IO, clearing a blockage can mean pulling up a toilet, cutting into a pipe or digging.
Camera inspections
An IO lets a camera go straight into the line to find roots, cracks and breaks.
Faster, cheaper jobs
An easy-to-reach IO turns a long, messy job into a quick one.
The rules
Inspection openings are meant to be brought up to the finished surface and kept accessible, so they can actually be used.
Common problems
- The IO has been buried under turf, garden beds or mulch.
- Paving or concrete has been poured over it.
- It was never brought up to the surface when the pipe was laid.
- The cap is broken, letting in soil, roots and stormwater.
How we fix it
We locate the IO with a camera and locator, dig down to it, extend it to the finished surface with new fittings and a proper cap, and make good around it. If there's no IO where one is needed, we can install one. You get a fixed price before any work starts. It's often done at the same time as a blockage clearance or camera inspection.
In southern Eastern Suburbs homes
In older homes in Matraville, Maroubra and Botany, we regularly find the IO under a lawn, a driveway or a new courtyard. Raising it means the next blockage is a quick visit rather than a dig.

Common questions
What is a sewer inspection opening?
A capped access point on the sewer line that lets a plumber clear blockages and run cameras.
Why does my inspection opening need to be at ground level?
So it can be found and used. A buried IO makes clearing blockages slower, messier and more expensive.
Can I cover my inspection opening with pavers?
No. It should stay at the surface and accessible.
What if I don't have an inspection opening?
One can usually be installed in a suitable spot on the line.
