My toilet flush isn't strong enough
A flush that barely moves the water, leaves things behind or needs a second go is frustrating, and it often means something can be adjusted or repaired. Sometimes the cistern isn't filling properly; sometimes the parts inside are worn; and sometimes an old pan and a modern water-saving cistern just don't suit each other. Here's what affects flush strength and what can be done.
Common causes of a weak flush
Cistern not filling enough
If the water level in the cistern is set too low, or the inlet valve is slow or partly blocked, there isn't enough water for a strong flush.
Worn flush valve
The flush valve and its seal release the water into the pan. When they're worn or the button linkage is out of adjustment, only part of the water goes through.
Partial blockage
A slow drain below the toilet makes even a good flush look weak. If the bowl drains slowly or rises, see toilet water rising.
Mismatched pan and cistern
Older pans were designed for bigger flushes. A modern water-saving cistern on an old pan, or a mix of parts, can give a poor flush.
Mineral build-up
The small holes under the rim can clog over time, so water doesn't wash the bowl properly.
What we can do
- Adjust the water level and flush mechanism so the cistern uses its full flush.
- Replace a worn inlet valve, flush valve or button so it fills and flushes properly.
- Clear any partial blockage in the pan or the pipe below.
- If the toilet itself is the problem, fit a modern toilet designed to flush well on less water. See toilet replacement.

Many older homes in Matraville, Maroubra and Botany still have original pans that have had new cisterns or flush parts fitted over the years. When the parts don't match, the flush suffers. A quick check usually tells us whether an adjustment will do or whether a new suite is the better fix.

Common questions
Why is my toilet flush so weak?
Usually the cistern isn't filling enough, the flush valve is worn, the drain is partly blocked, or the pan and cistern don't suit each other.
Can I make my toilet flush stronger?
Often, yes, by adjusting the water level and flush mechanism or replacing worn parts. If the pan is the problem, a new toilet may be needed.
Why do I have to flush twice?
A weak flush, a partial blockage or a pan that doesn't suit the cistern are the usual reasons.
Do modern toilets flush worse because they use less water?
Not when they're designed as a matched pan and cistern. Problems usually come from mixing new parts with old pans.
