Where can I put a gas bayonet?
A gas bayonet is a plug-in gas point. Inside, it lets you plug in a portable gas heater in winter and unplug it in summer. Outside, it's the neat way to run a BBQ or patio heater off the house gas. Where a bayonet can go depends on what you'll plug into it, the room, and the clearances in the gas rules. Here's a plain guide.
Common places for a bayonet
Living rooms
The most common spot for a heater bayonet, on a wall or in the floor where the heater will sit.
Open-plan family areas
Larger rooms where a heater can sit clear of furniture and curtains.
Outdoor walls
For BBQs and outdoor heaters, close to where they'll be used. See gas BBQ conversions.
Alfresco areas
Outdoor areas that are open enough for outdoor gas appliances to be used safely.
Where they can't go
- Heaters without a flue shouldn't be used in bedrooms or bathrooms, so heater bayonets don't go there.
- Not behind doors, curtains or furniture where a heater would be a fire risk.
- Not in small enclosed rooms without enough ventilation for the heater.
- Outdoor appliances must never be used inside, even if a bayonet is close by.
What's involved
We run gas pipe from your existing gas line to the new point, fit the bayonet in the wall or floor, test for leaks and provide the compliance paperwork. Under a timber floor it's usually straightforward; on a slab we look at the neatest route. You get a fixed price before any work starts. See gas point installation.
Keep heaters safe
Have gas heaters serviced at least every two years, keep vents clear, and consider a carbon monoxide alarm. See gas heater servicing and our gas safety guide.
In southern Eastern Suburbs homes
Many older homes in Matraville, Pagewood and Kingsford have an original bayonet in the lounge room. When it leaks or the plug won't seal, we can replace it, or move it to where the heater actually gets used.

Common questions
Can I put a gas bayonet in my bedroom?
Not for a heater without a flue. Bedrooms and bathrooms aren't suitable for those heaters.
Can I have a gas bayonet outside for a BBQ?
Yes. An outdoor bayonet lets a converted BBQ run off the house gas.
Can I install a gas bayonet myself?
No. All gas fitting must be done by a licensed gasfitter.
My gas bayonet leaks when the heater is unplugged. Is that normal?
No. A bayonet should seal itself when unplugged. A leaking bayonet needs replacing.
