Gas BBQ conversions: from bottle to natural gas
Running out of gas halfway through a barbecue gets old fast. If your home has natural gas, your BBQ can usually be converted to run off the house supply, plugged into a gas bayonet on the outside wall. No more swapping bottles. Here's what a conversion involves and which BBQs can be converted.
Can my BBQ be converted?
- Many BBQs can be converted from LPG to natural gas using the maker's conversion kit, which changes the injectors and regulator to suit natural gas.
- Some models can't be converted, or the kit is no longer available. Check the maker's information or the data plate on the BBQ.
- The conversion must be done by a licensed gasfitter, using the correct parts for that model.
- Natural gas and LPG need different injectors. A BBQ set up for one must never be used on the other.
What's involved
Outdoor gas point
We run a gas line to a bayonet point on the outside wall, close to where the BBQ will sit.
Converting the BBQ
We fit the maker's conversion kit, set it up for natural gas and label it.
Connection hose
An approved hose with a bayonet fitting connects the BBQ to the point, so it can be unplugged and moved.
Testing and paperwork
We test for leaks and correct operation, and provide the compliance paperwork.
You get a fixed price before any work starts. See gas point installation.
Don't have natural gas?
If your street has no gas main, the BBQ stays on LPG, but we can still fit a larger cylinder setup or a fixed LPG point. See getting gas connected.
In southern Eastern Suburbs homes
Plenty of homes in Matraville, Maroubra and Pagewood have natural gas for the cooktop and hot water but still run the BBQ off a bottle. A bayonet point on the back wall is one of the most popular small jobs we do before summer.

Common questions
Can any gas BBQ be converted to natural gas?
Not all. Many can, using the maker's conversion kit. Check the model or ask us.
Can I convert my BBQ myself?
No. Converting a gas appliance is gas fitting work for a licensed gasfitter.
Can I use a natural gas BBQ on a bottle?
No. Once converted, it must only be used on natural gas unless it's converted back by a gasfitter.
Where should the BBQ gas point go?
On an outside wall close to where you'll use the BBQ, positioned to meet the required clearances.
