Gas heater servicing and installation
A gas heater makes a cold Sydney evening far more bearable, as long as it's burning cleanly and safely. From our workshop in Matraville, our licensed gasfitters service, repair and install gas space heaters for homeowners throughout the southern Eastern Suburbs. We explain what we find, lay out your choices and agree a fixed price with you before any work begins.
Signs your gas heater needs attention
It won't light or keeps cutting out
The igniter clicks but nothing catches, or the flame dies after a few minutes. A dirty pilot, a faulty thermocouple or a worn safety valve is often the culprit.
Yellow or lazy flames
A healthy gas flame is mostly crisp and blue. Floppy, yellow or orange flames can mean poor combustion, which is exactly what a service is designed to pick up.
Soot, stains or odd smells
Dark marks on the wall or the heater casing, or a stale smell when it's running, are warning signs. Switch it off and book a check before using it again.
Not serviced in a while
If you can't remember when a gasfitter last looked at your heater, it's probably overdue. Dust, lint and spider webs build up inside over the warmer months.
Gas safety: If you smell gas, turn off the gas at the meter, open doors and windows, get everyone outside, don't use switches or flames, and call a licensed gasfitter.
Why regular servicing matters
A gas heater burns fuel inside your living space, or vents its exhaust through a flue to the outside. When it's well maintained, that process is clean and efficient. When burners are dirty, seals are tired or a flue is partly blocked, the heater can produce carbon monoxide.
Carbon monoxide is a gas you can't see, smell or taste. Early symptoms of exposure can feel like a headache, dizziness, nausea or tiredness that gets better when you leave the room. That's why we strongly recommend two simple habits: have your heater serviced by a licensed gasfitter as often as the manufacturer recommends (for many models that's at least every two years), and fit a carbon monoxide alarm in the rooms where gas appliances run.
If you ever suspect a heater is giving off fumes, turn it off, open the room up to fresh air and get out. Anyone who feels unwell should seek medical advice straight away.
What a heater service covers
- Cleaning burners, the pilot assembly, fans and filters.
- Checking the gas pressure and adjusting it to the maker's specification.
- Testing the flame safety device and ignition system.
- Inspecting the flue, or room ventilation for unflued models, for blockages and correct operation.
- Carrying out a spillage test to make sure exhaust gases are going where they should.
- Leak testing the connection and checking the hose and bayonet for wear.
If a part has failed, we'll tell you whether a repair stacks up or whether replacing the heater is the smarter move. Wall furnaces, convection heaters, flued space heaters and portable units on a bayonet all get the same careful approach.
Gas heating in southern Eastern Suburbs homes
Plenty of older brick homes in Matraville, Maroubra and Botany still have a wall furnace or a flued heater that was fitted a long time ago. Many are still going, but older units deserve a closer look at the flue, the seals and the gas valve. In fibro homes, where walls and ceilings are thinner, we pay extra attention to flue clearances.
Townhouses in Pagewood and Eastgardens often rely on a portable heater plugged into a wall bayonet. Those bayonets get knocked, painted over and stuffed with dust, so we check them on every visit. Coastal homes near Malabar and Little Bay can see faster corrosion on outside flue terminals, which we look for as part of the job.

What you can safely check yourself
- Vacuum dust from the grilles and vents with the heater switched off and cool.
- Keep curtains, furniture and washing well clear of the front of the heater.
- Look at the hose on a portable unit for cracks, kinks or stiffness.
- Test your carbon monoxide and smoke alarms at the start of winter.
- Never block the air vents or flue outlet.

Common questions
How often should a gas heater be serviced?
Follow the interval in your owner's manual. For many heaters it's at least once every two years, and older units may benefit from a yearly check.
When is the best time to book a service?
Late summer and autumn are ideal, before you need the heater on cold nights. Bookings get busier once the weather turns.
My heater won't light. Is it worth fixing?
Often, yes. Ignition problems are commonly caused by a dirty pilot or a worn thermocouple, which are repairable. If the heater is very old or parts are hard to get, we'll talk you through replacement options too.
Do I really need a carbon monoxide alarm?
We recommend one in any home with gas heating. It's an inexpensive extra layer of protection that warns you if something goes wrong between services.
Can you service my Rinnai or other brand heater?
Yes. We service, repair and replace most common brands of gas space heater, including Rinnai.
Is it safe to use a portable gas heater in a bedroom?
Check the manufacturer's instructions for your model, as some unflued heaters must not be used in bedrooms or small rooms. Ventilation requirements matter, so if you're unsure, ask us at your service.
Can you install a new gas heater?
Yes. We can connect a new heater to an existing bayonet, or run a fresh gas line and fit a flued unit, then leak test everything and provide a compliance certificate.
