My house doesn't have gas. Can I get it connected?
Many homes in the Eastern Suburbs were built without gas, or had it disconnected years ago. If you want a gas cooktop, gas hot water or a heater, there are two routes: connect to the natural gas network if there's a main in your street, or use LPG bottles if there isn't. Here's how each works and what's involved.
Option 1: natural gas from the street
If there's a gas main in your street, your home can usually be connected. The steps are:
- Check there's a gas main in the street. Many Eastern Suburbs streets have one.
- A connection is requested through a gas retailer, and the network (Jemena in this area) runs the service pipe to a new meter at your property.
- We run the gas pipework from the meter to each appliance location, test it and issue the compliance paperwork.
- We install and commission the appliances.
Option 2: LPG where there's no gas main
If the street doesn't have natural gas, LPG (bottled gas) can run most of the same appliances. Usually two large cylinders sit outside on a changeover regulator, so when one empties the other takes over. LPG is delivered by a gas supplier. The cylinders need to be positioned with the required clearances from windows, doors, drains and ignition sources, and the appliances must be set up for LPG.
Natural gas
Continuous supply from the network, billed by a retailer. Needs a main in the street.
LPG
Bottles delivered and swapped. Works anywhere, but cylinders need space and correct positioning.

Common questions
Can I get gas connected to my house?
Usually, yes. If there's a gas main in your street, natural gas can be connected. If not, LPG bottles are an option.
What if my street doesn't have natural gas?
LPG bottles can run most gas appliances. They need to be positioned with the right clearances and the appliances set up for LPG.
Who connects the gas meter?
The gas network installs the service and meter after a connection request through a retailer. A licensed gasfitter runs the pipework to your appliances.
Can appliances run on both natural gas and LPG?
Many can be set up for either, but they must be configured or converted for the gas type by a licensed gasfitter.
