Gas compliance certificates for NSW homes
Had gas work done, or planning some? A compliance certificate is the paperwork that shows it was carried out by a licensed gasfitter and meets the required standards. We're a licensed team working from Matraville across the southern Eastern Suburbs, and every gas job we do comes with the right certificate, plus clear options and a fixed price agreed up front.
When homeowners usually receive one
A new appliance is connected
Hooking up a gas cooktop, oven, space heater or gas hot water unit counts as gasfitting. Once it's tested and running, the person who did it certifies the work.
Gas pipework is added or changed
Running a line to a new room, extending to an outdoor area or rerouting an existing pipe all involve altering your installation, so a certificate follows.
A bayonet point is installed or moved
New wall or outdoor bayonets are part of your fixed gas system. Adding or relocating one is certified like any other pipework job.
A faulty section is repaired
When a leaking joint, damaged pipe or failed valve is replaced, the repaired work is tested and documented so you know it was done properly.
Important: If you smell gas, turn off the gas at the meter, open doors and windows, get everyone outside, don't use switches or flames, and call a licensed gasfitter.
What a compliance certificate actually is
Put simply, it's a written statement from a licensed gasfitter saying that the gas work they personally carried out at your property complies with the relevant standards. It records who did the job, their licence number, the address, the date and a description of what was installed or altered.
Two things are worth understanding. First, the certificate covers the work that gasfitter performed, not your whole home's gas system. If we connect a new cooktop, the certificate relates to that connection and the testing around it. Second, it's issued by the person who did the work. Nobody can certify somebody else's gasfitting after the fact, which is one reason unlicensed or DIY gas work causes headaches later on.
In NSW, gasfitting must be done by someone holding the appropriate licence. Depending on the type of job, there may also be notification or lodgement steps behind the scenes. When you use us, we take care of all of that paperwork, and you simply receive your copy.
How we test before we certify
A certificate is only as good as the checks behind it. On every gas job, our gasfitters work through a set routine before signing anything off:
- Pressure testing the pipework to confirm it holds without dropping.
- Leak testing every joint and fitting we've made or disturbed.
- Checking appliance operating pressure against the manufacturer's data plate.
- Confirming flues, ventilation and clearances suit the appliance and the room.
- Lighting and observing the appliance to make sure it burns correctly.
Only when everything passes do we complete the certificate. If something doesn't, we explain the issue, give you your options with a price for each, and wait for your go-ahead.
Gas paperwork in southern Eastern Suburbs homes
Many older houses in Matraville, Maroubra, Malabar and Botany have had gas appliances swapped several times over the decades, and often there's no record of who did what. When we work on these homes, our certificate gives you a clean starting point for the part of the system we've touched.
Owners of newer townhouses and apartments in Pagewood and Eastgardens sometimes find that a previous occupant added a heater bayonet or changed a cooktop without leaving any documents. If you're unsure whether earlier work was certified, we're happy to inspect it and talk you through what we see.
Keeping your certificate safe
- Store it with your other home records, such as appliance manuals and warranty cards.
- Take a photo or scan so you have a digital backup.
- Keep it for as long as you own the home, and hand it on if you sell.
- Have it ready if an insurer or a future tradie asks about past gas work.

Common questions
Do I get a compliance certificate automatically?
You should receive one whenever a licensed gasfitter carries out gas work at your home. With us, it's included as part of the job and you don't need to ask for it.
Does the certificate cover my entire gas system?
No. It covers the specific work the gasfitter did, such as connecting an appliance or installing a pipe. Other parts of your system aren't certified by that document.
Can you certify gas work someone else did?
A gasfitter can only certify their own work. If you have doubts about earlier work, we can inspect it, and if anything needs fixing, the repair we carry out will be certified.
What if I've lost my certificate?
Contact the gasfitter who did the job and ask whether they can supply a copy. If it was us, get in touch and we'll look up our records.
Is DIY gas work allowed in NSW?
No. Gasfitting has to be done by an appropriately licensed person. Doing it yourself is unsafe and means the work can't be certified.
Why does the certificate matter if everything works?
Working and compliant aren't always the same thing. The certificate shows the job was tested and done to the standards, which can be useful if questions come up later.
