Backflow prevention testing

Backflow happens when water flows the wrong way, from a property back into the drinking water supply. A backflow prevention device stops that happening, and Sydney Water requires testable devices to be tested when they're installed and every year after that. Our team includes accredited backflow testers, so we can test your device, carry out any repairs needed, and lodge the results with Sydney Water for you.

Who needs backflow testing

Businesses and commercial sites

Cafes, restaurants, workshops, medical practices and other sites with medium or high hazard connections.

Homes with tanks or irrigation

Properties with rainwater tanks, irrigation or other connections that need a testable device.

Properties with fire services

Fire hose reels and sprinkler connections are typically protected by a testable device.

Homes with irrigation or rainwater top-ups

Some residential set-ups need a device, depending on the hazard.

What's involved

Here's what to expect from your annual test.

  • We book in the test. Call us with the property address and any details from your last test report if you have them.
  • We test the device. Our accredited tester checks the valves are sealing and the device is working as designed.
  • Repairs if needed. If the device fails, we explain why and quote to repair or replace parts so it can pass a retest.
  • Results are lodged. Sydney Water requires test results to be lodged within 2 days of the test, and we take care of that.
  • You get a copy. We'll provide a copy of the report for your records.

Why annual testing matters

Backflow devices have internal valves and seals that wear over time. A device that looked fine when installed can fail silently, which is why Sydney Water requires testable devices to be checked every year. Annual testing confirms the device is still protecting the water supply, and keeps you compliant as the property owner.

If you're not sure when your device was last tested, check your last report or give us a call and we'll book in a test.

New installations

If your property needs a backflow device for the first time, perhaps because of a new business fit-out, irrigation system or fire service, we can advise on the right device for the hazard and install it. Testable devices are tested at installation, and then yearly after that.
