Gas continuous flow hot water systems

A continuous flow system, sometimes called instantaneous or tankless hot water, heats water as it passes through the unit. Turn on the tap and the burner fires; turn it off and it stops. There's no tank to keep hot, so you're not paying to heat water that sits there unused, and you won't run out halfway through the third shower of the morning. Units are compact and wall-mounted, which makes them a handy fit for townhouses, terraces and homes with limited space. Our licensed gasfitters install, replace and repair continuous flow systems throughout the eastern suburbs.

Common continuous flow problems

If you notice any of these, give us a call before the unit stops altogether.

  • Water runs hot, then cold. Often caused by low flow rates, a partly blocked filter or a gas supply that can't keep up.
  • The unit shows an error code. Codes point to ignition, flame, overheating or sensor faults. We'll diagnose it on site.
  • It won't fire at all. Check the power point and gas isolation valve first. If they're on, the unit needs a technician.
  • Lukewarm water at the far end of the house. Long pipe runs can mean a wait or heat loss, which a different unit placement or temperature setting may help.
  • Corrosion or soot around the flue. This needs attention from a licensed gasfitter, so switch the unit off and call us.

Is continuous flow the right choice?

Continuous flow is a great fit when you have natural gas connected, don't want to run out of hot water and want to free up space. It's less suited if your gas supply is undersized and can't easily be upgraded, or if you're planning to move the home to all-electric. In that case a heat pump may make more sense.

Units are usually installed externally on a wall, with clearances from windows, doors and boundaries set by the gas installation rules. Internal models are available but need a flue to the outside. We'll check all of this at the free on-site quote and explain the options in plain English.

If your existing tank has failed and you just need hot water back, see hot water replacement for how we handle changeovers.

Common questions

Will I really never run out?

As long as the unit is sized to your household and the gas supply is adequate, you'll have hot water for as long as the tap is on.

Do I need a power point?

Yes. Continuous flow units need a power point nearby for the ignition and controls. We'll check this when we quote.

Can it run more than one shower at once?

Larger units handle multiple outlets well. We size the unit to how many showers and taps you use at the same time.

Can you swap my gas tank for continuous flow?

Usually, yes. We'll check your gas meter and pipe size first, as continuous flow units draw more gas while they're running.

We install continuous flow systems in Malabar, Hillsdale and Maroubra.
