Heat pump hot water installation
Heating water is one of the biggest energy costs in most homes. A heat pump works like a fridge in reverse, pulling warmth out of the surrounding air and moving it into the water, so it uses far less electricity than a standard electric tank. Sydney's mild coastal climate suits heat pumps well, and they're a popular choice for households in the eastern suburbs who want to get off gas or cut their power bill. We install heat pumps for houses, townhouses and units with outdoor space.
Why people choose a heat pump
Lower running costs
Because the unit moves heat rather than creating it, it uses a fraction of the power of a conventional electric tank to heat the same water.
Works well with solar
If you have rooftop solar, many heat pumps can be timed to run during the day when your panels are producing.
A step away from gas
Plenty of homeowners are going all-electric. A heat pump replaces a gas storage tank without losing hot water capacity.
Rebates may apply
Ask us about current NSW and federal rebates. Eligibility depends on your existing system and the unit chosen.
Is a heat pump right for your home?
A quick check of these points tells us whether a heat pump is a good fit.
- You need some outdoor space. Heat pumps need airflow, so they sit outside, typically against a side wall, in a courtyard or on a balcony with enough room.
- Noise matters near bedrooms. Modern units are fairly quiet, but we'll suggest placing them away from bedroom windows and neighbours where possible.
- Your power supply needs checking. Most homes are fine, but we'll check there's a suitable circuit for the unit.
- Household size sets the tank size. We'll size the tank to the number of people and how you use hot water.
- Your current system's age matters. If your electric or gas tank is getting on, it's a good time to plan the switch before it fails.
About heat pump rebates
There are currently two main incentives that can reduce the upfront cost of a heat pump in NSW. The NSW Government's Energy Savings Scheme can provide a discount when you replace an existing electric or gas hot water system with an eligible heat pump, and the federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme creates certificates (STCs) for eligible systems that are usually passed on as a discount at the point of sale.
These programs have eligibility rules and their values change over time, and they're delivered by accredited certificate providers rather than by us. Ask us about current NSW and federal rebates when we quote, and we'll point you in the right direction so you can check what applies to your home.
How the install works
- We inspect your current system and the proposed location, free of charge.
- You get a written quote with the recommended unit.
- On install day we remove the old system, mount and connect the heat pump, and run the condensate drain.
- We test it, set it up and show you the controls and any timer settings.

Common questions
Do heat pumps work in winter?
Yes. Sydney's coastal winters are mild, which suits heat pumps. Most units heat water efficiently well below the temperatures we see in the eastern suburbs.
Can a heat pump go on a unit balcony?
Sometimes. It depends on space, airflow, drainage, weight and your strata by-laws. We'll take a look and let you know if it's practical.
Do you process the rebate for me?
No, we don't process rebates. Ask us about current NSW and federal rebates and we'll explain how the schemes generally work so you can check your eligibility.
Are they noisy?
They make a low hum similar to an air conditioner outdoor unit. Placement makes a big difference, so we plan that carefully.
