Hot water repairs and servicing

Not every hot water problem means a new system. A dripping relief valve, a failed thermostat or a pilot that won't stay lit can often be fixed for a fraction of the cost of replacement, and regular servicing helps a tank reach the end of its expected life. Our licensed plumbers and gasfitters find out what's actually wrong, tell you honestly whether it's worth repairing, and get your hot water back to normal.

Repairs we handle

Relief valve and tempering valve faults

Valves that drip constantly or have stopped working are replaced so the system runs safely.

Thermostats and elements

No hot water or water that's too hot on an electric tank is often a thermostat or element we can replace.

Gas ignition and pilot problems

Pilots that won't stay lit, thermocouples and gas controls checked by a licensed gasfitter.

Sacrificial anodes

The anode protects the tank from corrosion. Replacing it at the right time can help extend the tank's life.

Continuous flow faults

Error codes, ignition failures and temperature swings diagnosed on site.

When to book a service or repair

Book us in if you notice any of the following.

  • The relief valve drips or pours. A small, occasional drip during heating can be normal; a constant flow isn't.
  • Hot water is running out early. It could be a failing element, a thermostat fault or sediment taking up tank space.
  • Water is too hot or not hot enough. Temperature problems can be a safety issue, especially where children or elderly people live.
  • The pilot keeps going out. Repeated pilot failure on a gas tank needs a gasfitter to check the controls and flue.
  • It's been years since anyone looked at it. Many manufacturers recommend periodic servicing of valves and anodes. A check-up now can head off a failure later.

What happens on a service call

We start by asking what you've noticed and how old the system is. Then we check the relief valve, tempering valve if fitted, thermostat settings, element or burner, and the general condition of the tank and fittings. On gas systems we also check the flue and gas controls.

If the fix is straightforward we'll explain it and the cost before we do anything. If the tank itself is leaking, or the repair would cost a big chunk of a new system on an old unit, we'll tell you plainly and talk through replacement options instead. We'd rather give you an honest answer than keep patching a system that's about to fail.

Common questions

My relief valve is leaking. Is that dangerous?

A valve that's dripping a little during heating is usually normal. If it's leaking constantly or not releasing at all, it should be checked, as the valve protects the tank from excess pressure.

How often should a hot water system be serviced?

It depends on the manufacturer and your water quality. Your owner's manual will have their recommendation, and we can advise when we're on site.

Can you repair any brand?

We work on most common brands of electric, gas and continuous flow systems. If parts are no longer available for a very old unit, we'll let you know.

Is it worth repairing an old tank?

If the tank is sound and the fault is a valve or thermostat, often yes. If the cylinder is leaking, it needs replacing.

We service hot water systems in Matraville, Little Bay and Maroubra.
