Hot water system replacement in Sydney's eastern suburbs

When a hot water system starts leaking from the tank, takes forever to reheat or keeps tripping the power, it's usually telling you it's near the end. Our licensed plumbers and gasfitters replace electric storage, gas storage, gas continuous flow and heat pump systems for homes and units from Matraville to Coogee. We look at how many people are in the house, what fuel you've got available and where the unit sits, then recommend a system that suits the way you actually use hot water rather than whatever's sitting on the shelf.

Systems we install

Electric storage

A simple, reliable choice where gas isn't connected or there's no room for anything bigger. We size the tank to your household so you don't run out mid-shower.

Gas storage

Good for bigger families who use a lot of hot water at once. Our gasfitters handle the gas connection, flue clearances and compliance paperwork.

Gas continuous flow

Heats water only when you turn on a tap, so you never run out and there's no tank losing heat all day.

Heat pump

Uses a fraction of the electricity of a standard electric tank by pulling heat from the air. Ask us about current NSW and federal rebates.

Signs it's time to replace, not repair

Some faults are worth fixing, but these usually mean the tank has had its run.

  • Water pooling under the tank. A leak from the cylinder itself can't be patched; the inner lining has failed and it will only get worse.
  • Rusty or discoloured hot water. Brown water from the hot tap only often points to corrosion inside the tank.
  • The system is well over ten years old. Most storage tanks are designed for around 8 to 12 years, so an older unit with a fault is often better replaced than repaired.
  • You're running out more often. Sediment build-up and failing elements reduce how much hot water you actually get.
  • Rumbling, popping or banging noises. Hardened sediment at the bottom of the tank makes the system work harder and wears it out.
  • Your household has changed. A tank that suited two people won't keep up with a growing family, and the reverse wastes energy.

How a replacement works

Every job starts with a free on-site inspection and quote. Call us and we'll book a plumber to come out, look at your current set-up, check access, fuel type, power supply and drainage for the relief valve, and talk through the options that make sense for your home.

  1. Inspect and quote. We assess the old system and give you a clear written quote for the replacement you choose.
  2. Supply the right unit. We source the system from reputable suppliers so it's ready for install day.
  3. Remove and install. We drain and disconnect the old unit, install the new one with new valves and fittings where needed, and connect water, gas or power as required.
  4. Test and tidy up. We fill, test for leaks, check temperatures and show you how the new system works before we take the old one away.

If you're unsure whether your current unit is worth saving, our hot water servicing page explains what can be repaired. For general hot water help, see our main hot water page.

Common questions

Can I switch from gas to electric or a heat pump?

Yes. Many people in the eastern suburbs are moving away from gas. We'll check your power supply and where a heat pump could sit, and explain what's involved before you decide.

How long does a replacement take?

A like-for-like swap is usually done in a few hours. Changing fuel type or location takes longer, and we'll tell you what to expect when we quote.

Do you take the old system away?

Yes, removing the old tank is part of the job.

Can you give me a price over the phone?

Every home is different, so we don't quote blind. Call us and we'll book a plumber to inspect and quote on site, free of charge.

We replace hot water systems right across the area, including Maroubra, Malabar and Matraville.
