Blocked drains in Matraville

Slow sinks, gurgling toilets or water coming up through the outside gully? We clear blocked sewer and stormwater drains in Matraville homes every week, and our office is right here at 30/10 Girawah Place. We find what's causing the blockage, clear it properly, and show you the options to stop it coming back, with a fixed price before any work starts.

Signs your drain is blocked

  • Sinks, showers or baths draining slowly
  • Toilets that gurgle, bubble or rise when flushed
  • Bad smells from drains or the yard
  • Water overflowing from the outside gully, usually near the laundry or kitchen
  • Soggy patches or lush grass over the line in the yard
  • Downpipes and yard pits overflowing in heavy rain

Why Matraville drains block

Many Matraville homes were built after the war and still have their original clay sewer pipes. Clay pipes are joined every metre or so, and over the decades those joints shift and crack. Tree roots from yards and nature strips find their way in, grow, and catch everything that goes down the drain. That's the most common cause of repeat blockages we see in the suburb.

Newer duplexes and townhouses bring different problems. Where blocks have been redeveloped, drainage lines are sometimes shared or reconnected, and it can take a camera to work out which section is causing the trouble. And when it rains hard, leaves and silt clog stormwater pits and downpipes, so water backs up against the house.

How we clear it

High-pressure jetting

A jetter blasts out fat, silt and root mass and scours the inside of the pipe, not just a hole through the blockage.

CCTV camera inspection

We put a camera down the line so you can see the cause on screen: roots, a cracked or collapsed pipe, or a dip in the line. More →

Root cutting

For root-choked clay lines, we cut the roots back to clear the pipe and get it flowing again.

Patch pipe relining

If a section is cracked or a joint keeps letting roots in, we can seal it from the inside with a patch liner, often without digging up the yard. More →

Once the drain is clear, we explain what we found and give you options, from a simple clear to a longer-term fix like relining the damaged section. You choose, and you know the price before we start.

Common questions

Who is responsible for a blocked sewer, me or Sydney Water?

Generally, the homeowner looks after the private sewer pipe from the house to where it joins Sydney Water's sewer main, and Sydney Water looks after the main. If we find the blockage is in the main, we'll tell you so you can report it to Sydney Water.

Why does my drain keep blocking?

Usually because something is still wrong with the pipe, most often roots getting in through cracked joints in old clay pipes. A camera inspection shows the cause, so you can decide whether to keep clearing it or fix the damaged section.

Will you need to dig up my yard?

Not usually. Most blockages clear with jetting, and many damaged sections can be fixed with patch relining from inside the pipe.

Can drain cleaners from the supermarket fix it?

They can shift a little soap or grease near the sink, but they won't clear roots or a damaged pipe, and some are harsh on older pipework. If the problem keeps coming back, it's worth getting it checked.
